Workshop
Nurturing Interest, Cultivating Passion In Science!
This Life @ Science! Workshops series is designed to nurture the interest and passion of lower primary students in science at an early stage. This series engage the multi-sensory learning of the students to make them aware of their five senses, and to learn to observe, compare and classify objects into similar groupings in a fun and creative learning environment. At the end of the workshop, students will learn to:
- Be more aware of and uses of their five senses in discovering science
- Observe, compare and classify objects into similar groupings
- Draw own conclusions of scientific concepts through hands-on experiment, provide logical reasoning to support their solutions, generate a simple hypothesis based on the given set of apparatus and materials
- Apply scientific facts, concepts and principles to new situations, and understand and develop scientific inquiry skills and apply the investigative approach for their future experiments
- Learn and apply concepts across topics
- Reflect after each activity by writing down their thoughts
- Appreciate the productive synergy of good teamwork
Approach
- Enable students to grasp the topics on life cycles of plants and animals, plant parts, photosynthesis, life sciences and simple chemistry in simple and non-threatening language, and in a fun and creative way
- Encourage and develop the use of higher-order thinking skills like analysis, problem-solving and interpretation through inquiry-based learning
- Cultivate their interest in science through observing nature and hands-on learning
- Inspire their interest and learning enthusiasm across disciplines
- Encourage their creativity as they learn through their senses
Spices of Life - for little chefs ( P2 & P3)
This workshop uses various spices & herbs to teach the students how to create simple food and drinks. Using their senses, they will learn about different types of spices & herbs such as cinnamon, mint, pepper and lemon grass. From hands-on experiments, they will also learn about the different parts of the plants and why only plants can make the their own food. This workshop covers 2 sessions of 1.5 hours each.
Cycle of Life - for little vets ( P2 & P3)
Through the chicken and egg story and interactive games, the students will learn about the different stages of various animals' life cycle. They will also investigate and compare the life cycles of grasshopper, cat and chicken. Terms like genetics and reproduction of animals will be covered. This workshop covers 2 sessions of 1.5 hours each.
A Bug's Life - for little scientists ( P4 & P5)
The creepy crawlies almost always create a sense of wonders for young students. Through hands-on observation and investigation, they will study the different parts of an insect and learn about its living habitat as well. Its natural enemies and preys will be explored further using a food web. This workshop has 2 sessions of 2 hours each
A Colorful Life - for little chemists ( P4 & P5)
Be awed by the chemical reaction between acids and bases! Is black really just black? Students will learn how to make a hypothesis as they test the different liquids and infer the results using the self-made test kits. They will also learn about capillary action and chromatography as they investigate ink mixture in a variety of pens. This workshop has 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each.
