Service Leadership (VIA)

Serving to Learn, Learning to Serve

Programme Description

Service Learning – Values in Action (VIA) are learning experiences that support students’ development to contribute meaningfully to the community, through the learning and application of values, knowledge and skills.

Unlike conventional community service projects, whereby students view the experience as “volunteering work”, or “something we have to do”, or “I don’t know why I need to do this”, VIA fosters student ownership over how they contribute to the community. Learning is not left to chance, but is deliberately structured into the project. The experience allows participants to really see values and knowledge being applied in real situations and scenarios.

As part of VIA, students reflect on their experiences, the values they have put into practice, and how they can continue to contribute meaningfully.

Values in Action is an effective teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful engagement with the community. With skillful scaffolding from the facilitators and constant reflection to enrich the learning experience, it instils a sense of civic responsibility and aims to strengthen communities. It is effective in helping young people to make connections between the service they are providing and the world around them.

Values in Action Framework

Evaluating the needs of the community and asking the team how they can best meet them

Planning and organising the team so that the team can look for the different solutions to meet the needs of the community

Working out the selected plans and implementing them in the best possible manners

Throughout the whole process, the team will have to constantly think and ask themselves how they can best improve, as well as what they have learnt/caught in the process, individually as well as collectively

To help the individuals in the team to retain their learning, they will need to show and repeat the process with a new team or a new project

Programme Features

At Lifeskills Enrichment, the objectives of our Service Learning – Values in Action (VIA) programme are:

  • To adequately prepare and train the participants in Values in Action Projects
  • To impart Effective Planning and Organising skills to the participants so that they are able to plan and execute a service learning project
  • To introduce a framework and impart skill sets to allow participants to duplicate and multiply their efforts in other aspects of their life and leadership journey

Programme Features

The programme is designed to help participants to gain practical experiences and knowledge through the key stages of Service Learning. The participants will be trained in the basic concepts of Service Learning. As the participants engaged in the process of the framework through facilitation, they will plan, organise and execute a community project using the tools learnt.
